From Poverty to Empowerment: Building Economic Self Reliance for Women and Girls in Hong Kong March 7, 2007

To understand the root causes of and discuss solutions for the escalating problem of female poverty in Hong Kong, The Women’s Foundation convened 60 community leaders from a cross-section of Hong Kong’s public and private sectors to impart knowledge, share insights and identify actionable solutions to address feminization of poverty in Hong Kong. The event was kicked off with presentations by Dr. Mike Yao, TWF Board Member and Associate Professor of Communications at City University, and two Hong Kong researchers who are experts in the gendered aspects of poverty, Dr. Leung Lai Ching and Dr. Wong Hung. Panelists included Wu Meilin of Hong Kong Women Worker’s Association and Fong Man-ying of Hong Kong Federation of Women’s Centres. Small group discussions followed with participants discussing new research findings regarding women and poverty, an asset based framework for combating female poverty, and solutions for creating pathways to economic security for women and girls.
